Saudi Arabia has done quite well for itself as a result of its oil reserves, which means the country would likely be none too pleased if oil is replaced by a more sustainable fuel source. Saudi Arabia could overcome this by helping to lead the alternative energy charge. Saudi Arabia could become Solar Arabia, building massive solar farms in its expanse of desert. Batteries could be engineered that could hold large amounts of electrical energy in something roughly the size of an oil barrel. These could then be shipped anywhere in the world and plugged into infrastructure designed to use them. Empty batteries could be shipped back to be recharged, creating a resource loop. Solar isn’t the only option either. Wind energy could be harvested in the desert as well as off shore. The surrounding waters could be used for biomass generation as well. Solar Arabia could lead the global charge for sustainable energy resources, it just needs to rethink is position as an oil country. We don’t need to cater our efforts to the realities of today, we need to redefine the realities and restrictions to better fit our visions of the future.
Why aren’t electric cars self-powering? Yes, there will need to be some use of energy to start the car and start the motion, but once it’s moving, why doesn’t it power itself? If elliptical machines can be used to generate electricity to in turn feed the electrical needs of the gyms they inhabit, can’t the rotational motion of car wheels in turn power the car. Achieving something akin to perpetual motion. A feedback loop of energy. The wheels require energy to rotate, which can create energy to feed back into the system that expends energy to rotate the wheels. And on and on and on. What if we didn’t think about the electric vehicle battery as an alternative fuel source, a newfangled form of gasoline, but as an alternative to fuel. Everything about current electric cars mimics traditionally fueled cars. You charge the battery by using a plug that looks nearly identical to fuel pumps. A new form of energy should be freed from traditional structures. What rule states that cars require an energy source and can only travel until that energy source is depleted, creating a cycle of refueling? Let’s not search for alternative fuels, let’s search for alternatives to the traditional fuel mentality.
